Measure

Information

If you are comfortable doing these, this is a DIY to help determine risk. Share this data with me if you are comfortable doing so.

Measurements should be done when water levels are at their peak, typically in the December to April timeframe, or to your known high-water mark.

Measurement 1- A horizontal dimension from the surface water edge to the nearest point on your foundation. Plus or minus a foot is fine.

Measurement 2- A vertical measurement from the surface of the water to where the soil meets your foundation. Ideally this is more than 6 feet. Plus or minus a couple of inches is fine, this is the more important dimension.

2b- If you cannot readily access surface water, but can easily access the water table at a low point at the rear of your property, use the water table surface and note that you have. Let the hole sit covered to keep surface water out, until the level stabilizes. This is essentially an "observation well".

A walk out is shown because, particularly with older homes, the lowest footings may not be protected by a sump pump.

In a standard home all footings are at the same level. Without a sump these measurements indicate risk probability.

With a sump, how often the system runs is influenced by nearby bodies of water.
